Romanian VAT Number Check

Validate Romanian VAT numbers (cod de identificare fiscală (CIF), CUI) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Romania (RO + 2 to 10 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Romanian VAT number

Romanian businesses are identified by their fiscal identification code (cod de identificare fiscală, CIF), also called the CUI (cod unic de înregistrare). For VAT-registered businesses the VAT number is RO followed by that code.

Romania has the most flexible length in the EU: between 2 and 10 digits after the prefix. The Romanian tax administration (ANAF) also offers a public lookup of VAT payer status for domestic purposes.

Romanian VAT number format

  • Format: RO + 2 to 10 digits
  • Examples: RO12345678, RO1234567890 (illustrative, not real numbers)
  • Length: 4 to 12 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: cod de identificare fiscală (CIF), CUI
  • The format is RO followed by 2 to 10 digits.
  • The RO prefix signals VAT registration; a CUI written without RO is typically used by businesses that are not VAT payers.

Where to find a Romanian VAT number

  • On Romanian invoices, labelled CIF, CUI or Cod fiscal.
  • On the company website and in contracts.
  • From the supplier. The trade register number (for example J40/1234/2020) is a different identifier.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the trade register number (J…/…/…) instead of the CIF.
  • Padding the code with leading zeros so it exceeds 10 digits.
  • Leaving out RO.
  • Entering the 13-digit personal numeric code (CNP) of an individual.

Romanian VAT numbers in practice

The last digit of a Romanian CUI is a check digit calculated from the others. Codes have no fixed length: older companies tend to have shorter codes and newer ones longer codes, up to 10 digits. Do not pad a short code with zeros to make it look longer; the VAT number is RO followed by the code exactly as issued.

Romania requires invoices between Romanian businesses to be sent through the national RO e-Factura system, in which each party is identified by its fiscal code. For intra-EU trade, VIES remains the check that confirms whether a Romanian number is valid for intra-EU transactions.

Individuals in Romania have a 13-digit personal numeric code (CNP). It is too long for the Romanian VAT format and is not an EU VAT number.

On Romanian invoices the number is often printed as CIF RO12345678 or with a space after RO. Only the RO prefix and the digits belong in the validator; spaces are removed automatically.

How to check Romanian VAT numbers

Paste your Romanian numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with RO. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Romania format (RO + 2 to 10 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Romania tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
