Italian VAT Number Check

Validate Italian VAT numbers (Partita IVA, P.IVA) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Italy (IT + 11 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Italian VAT number

The Italian VAT number is the Partita IVA (often written P.IVA), 11 digits issued by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate). For intra-EU purposes it is written with the IT prefix.

Italian businesses also have a codice fiscale. For companies it is often the same 11 digits as the Partita IVA, but for individuals it is a 16-character code made of letters and digits, which is not a VAT number and cannot be checked in VIES.

Italian VAT number format

  • Format: IT + 11 digits
  • Example: IT12345678901 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 13 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: Partita IVA, P.IVA
  • The format is IT followed by exactly 11 digits. The last digit is a check digit.
  • An Italian number only shows as valid in VIES once the business is enabled for intra-EU operations; a Partita IVA that is active domestically can still come back invalid.

Where to find a Italian VAT number

  • On Italian invoices, labelled Partita IVA or P.IVA.
  • In the footer of the company website, where Italian businesses commonly display their Partita IVA.
  • On quotes, contracts and letterheads.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering a 16-character codice fiscale of an individual instead of the Partita IVA.
  • Losing a leading zero when the number was stored as a numeric spreadsheet cell.
  • Leaving out the IT prefix.
  • Entering the 7-character SdI recipient code (codice destinatario) instead of the Partita IVA.

Italian VAT numbers in practice

The 11 digits have a fixed structure: the first seven identify the taxpayer, the next three are the code of the provincial tax office that issued the number, and the last is a check digit. The Agenzia delle Entrate offers its own online Partita IVA check for domestic status, while VIES answers whether the number is included in the VIES archive of operators enabled for intra-EU transactions.

Since 2019 Italian businesses exchange invoices electronically through the Sistema di Interscambio (SdI), and each business also has a 7-character recipient code (codice destinatario) for receiving them. That code is often requested together with the Partita IVA, but it is not a VAT number and fails the format check.

Livigno and Campione d'Italia are part of Italy but outside the EU VAT area.

How to check Italian VAT numbers

Paste your Italian numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with IT. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Italy format (IT + 11 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Italy tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Italian VAT number FAQ

What is the format of an Italian VAT number?

IT followed by the 11-digit Partita IVA, for example IT12345678901.

Is the codice fiscale the same as the Partita IVA?

For many companies the digits are identical. For individuals the codice fiscale is a 16-character code and is not a VAT number.

Why is an active Partita IVA invalid in VIES?

The business may not be enabled for intra-EU operations. VIES reports whether the number is valid for intra-EU transactions, not whether it exists domestically.

My Partita IVA has only 10 digits. What happened?

A leading 0 was probably removed by a spreadsheet. Format the column as text and restore the zero.
