Validate Bulgarian VAT numbers (ДДС номер (DDS nomer), идентификационен номер по ДДС) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Bulgaria (BG + 9 or 10 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
In Bulgarian the VAT number is the ДДС номер, from ДДС (данък върху добавената стойност, value added tax). It is administered by the National Revenue Agency.
The length of a Bulgarian VAT number tells you what kind of taxpayer it belongs to. Companies use their 9-digit Unified Identification Code (UIC, ЕИК / EIK) from the Commercial Register, while VAT-registered individuals use a 10-digit personal number. In both cases the VAT number is simply BG followed by that code.
The 10-digit numbers used by VAT-registered individuals are based on their personal identification number: the EGN (ЕГН) for Bulgarian citizens, or the personal number of a foreigner (ЛНЧ, LNCh). Companies use the EIK, which is assigned when the company is entered in the Commercial Register, maintained by the Registry Agency (Агенция по вписванията).
Both the EIK and the EGN end in a check digit, so a mistyped digit usually produces a number that does not belong to any registered taxpayer. Branches and some other units can carry 13-digit BULSTAT codes. Those codes identify the unit rather than the VAT registration and are too long for the Bulgarian VAT format, which allows only 9 or 10 digits after BG.
Being entered in the Commercial Register does not make a company a VAT payer. Registration under the Bulgarian VAT Act is a separate step with the National Revenue Agency, which is why VIES is the check that tells you whether a Bulgarian number can be used for intra-EU transactions.
Paste your Bulgarian numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with BG. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Bulgaria format (BG + 9 or 10 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Bulgaria tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
9 digits for companies (BG123456789) or 10 digits for individuals (BG1234567890), after the BG prefix.
For VAT-registered companies the digits are the same: the VAT number is BG followed by the 9-digit EIK (UIC).
The company may exist in the Commercial Register without being registered for VAT. VIES only reports VAT registrations.
No. 13-digit codes are BULSTAT codes of branches and similar units. The Bulgarian VAT format allows only 9 digits (legal entities) or 10 digits (individuals) after BG.
