Polish VAT Number Check

Validate Polish VAT numbers (NIP (Numer Identyfikacji Podatkowej), NIP UE) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Poland (PL + 10 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Polish VAT number

The Polish VAT number is the NIP (Numer Identyfikacji Podatkowej, tax identification number) with the PL prefix. A NIP has 10 digits and is often written with hyphens, for example 123-456-78-90.

Every Polish business has a NIP, but only businesses registered as EU VAT taxpayers (VAT-UE) show as valid in VIES. Poland also publishes its own domestic register of VAT taxpayers (the "white list"), which is separate from VIES.

Polish VAT number format

  • Format: PL + 10 digits
  • Example: PL1234567890 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 12 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: NIP (Numer Identyfikacji Podatkowej), NIP UE
  • The format is PL followed by exactly 10 digits. The last digit is a check digit.
  • Hyphens in the domestic notation are fine; justaxit removes them before checking.

Where to find a Polish VAT number

  • On Polish invoices, labelled NIP.
  • On the company website and in the company's entry in the National Court Register (KRS).
  • In contracts and order confirmations.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the REGON (statistical number, 9 or 14 digits) instead of the NIP.
  • Entering the KRS number (10 digits, but a register number, not a tax number).
  • Checking a business that is VAT-registered domestically but not as a VAT-UE taxpayer.

Polish VAT numbers in practice

The first three digits of a NIP originally identified the tax office that issued it, and the last digit is a check digit calculated from the first nine. A single mistyped digit therefore normally gives a NIP that does not exist.

The domestic white list (Wykaz podatników VAT) also shows the bank accounts that Polish VAT payers have reported, and Polish businesses check it before paying larger invoices, because paying to an account that is not on the list can have tax consequences for the payer. For intra-EU invoicing, VIES is the check that matters: it confirms VAT-UE registration.

Poland is phasing in mandatory structured e-invoicing through the National e-Invoicing System (KSeF) from 2026. KSeF invoices identify the parties by NIP.

Polish companies also appear in the National Court Register (KRS), whose KRS number also has 10 digits, usually with leading zeros. Because the lengths match, a KRS number with PL in front passes the format check; only VIES shows that it is not a registered VAT number.

How to check Polish VAT numbers

Paste your Polish numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with PL. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Poland format (PL + 10 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Poland tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Polish VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a Polish VAT number?

PL followed by the 10-digit NIP, for example PL1234567890.

A Polish NIP is on the white list but VIES says invalid. Why?

The white list covers domestic VAT status. VIES only shows businesses registered for intra-EU transactions (VAT-UE).

Is the REGON the same as the NIP?

No. REGON is a statistical identifier with 9 or 14 digits. The EU VAT number uses the 10-digit NIP.

Can I paste NIP numbers with hyphens?

Yes, as long as each starts with PL. Hyphens and spaces are stripped before the number is checked.
