Validate Hungarian VAT numbers (közösségi adószám (community tax number), adószám) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Hungary (HU + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
Hungarian businesses have a domestic tax number (adószám) written as 11 digits in three blocks, for example 12345678-1-12. For intra-EU trade they use the community tax number (közösségi adószám): HU followed by the first 8 digits of the domestic number.
The Hungarian tax administration is the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV). Only the 8-digit community form can be checked in VIES; the full 11-digit domestic number is the wrong format.
The three blocks of the domestic adószám each carry meaning. The first 8 digits identify the taxpayer (the törzsszám, whose eighth digit is a check digit), the single middle digit shows the VAT status, and the last two digits identify the regional tax directorate. Only the first block goes into the EU VAT number.
Hungarian companies also have a company registration number (cégjegyzékszám), written in three groups such as 01-09-123456. It identifies the company in the company register and is not a tax number. Hungary requires businesses to report their invoice data to NAV in real time through the Online Számla system, where each party is identified by its tax number.
Paste your Hungarian numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with HU. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Hungary format (HU + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Hungary tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
HU followed by 8 digits, for example HU12345678.
Take the first 8 digits (the block before the first hyphen) and put HU in front. 12345678-1-12 becomes HU12345678.
VIES only accepts the 8-digit community form. The two extra blocks of the domestic tax number are not part of the EU VAT number.
The first 8 digits identify the taxpayer, the middle digit shows the VAT status and the last 2 digits the regional tax directorate. Only the first 8 digits go into the EU VAT number.
