Slovenian VAT Number Check

Validate Slovenian VAT numbers (identifikacijska številka za DDV, davčna številka) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Slovenia (SI + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Slovenian VAT number

The Slovenian VAT number (identifikacijska številka za DDV, DDV being the Slovenian abbreviation for VAT) is SI followed by the 8-digit tax number (davčna številka). It is administered by the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (Finančna uprava Republike Slovenije, FURS).

Slovenian companies also have a longer registration number (matična številka). It is the wrong number for a VIES check, and its extra digits make it fail the format check.

Slovenian VAT number format

  • Format: SI + 8 digits
  • Example: SI12345678 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 10 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: identifikacijska številka za DDV, davčna številka
  • The format is SI followed by exactly 8 digits.

Where to find a Slovenian VAT number

  • On Slovenian invoices, labelled ID za DDV.
  • On the company website and in contracts.
  • In the Slovenian business register.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the registration number (matična številka) instead of the tax number.
  • Leaving out SI.
  • Entering the 13-digit personal registration number (EMŠO) of an individual.

Slovenian VAT numbers in practice

The eighth digit of a Slovenian tax number is a check digit calculated from the first seven, so a mistyped digit normally produces a number that does not exist. Every taxpayer in Slovenia, including individuals, receives a tax number, and only those registered for VAT use it with SI as their VAT identification number.

Companies are recorded in the Slovenian Business Register (Poslovni register Slovenije), kept by AJPES, the agency for public legal records. The register shows both the tax number and the matična številka, which makes it the easiest place to tell the two apart.

Individuals also have a 13-digit personal registration number (EMŠO). It is not a tax number and does not belong in the VAT field.

Slovenian invoices show the supplier's VAT identification number, usually labelled ID za DDV, and invoices for supplies to businesses in other EU countries also carry the customer's VAT number. Slovenia joined the EU in 2004 and has used the SI prefix in VIES since then.

How to check Slovenian VAT numbers

Paste your Slovenian numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with SI. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Slovenia format (SI + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Slovenia tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Slovenian VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a Slovenian VAT number?

In the Slovenian Business Register kept by AJPES, which shows the tax number (davčna številka) and the registration number (matična številka) of each company.
