French VAT Number Check

Validate French VAT numbers (numéro de TVA intracommunautaire) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for France (FR + 2-character key + 9-digit SIREN) before it is sent to VIES.

About the French VAT number

The French intra-community VAT number (numéro de TVA intracommunautaire) is built from the SIREN, the 9-digit number that identifies every French company. In front of the SIREN sits a two-character key, and in front of that the FR prefix.

For most businesses the key is two digits calculated from the SIREN. This is why you cannot build a French VAT number from the SIREN alone by guessing the key: ask the supplier, or read the number from an invoice.

French VAT number format

  • Format: FR + 2-character key + 9-digit SIREN
  • Example: FR12345678901 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 13 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: numéro de TVA intracommunautaire
  • FR + 2-character key + 9-digit SIREN, 13 characters in total.
  • The key is usually two digits; a small number of registrations use letters in the key.

Where to find a French VAT number

  • On French invoices, where the supplier and (for B2B intra-EU sales) the customer VAT number are mandatory details.
  • On the company website, often in the legal notice (mentions légales).
  • On quotes and order forms.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the SIREN alone (FR123456789) without the two-character key.
  • Entering the 14-digit SIRET (establishment number) instead of the 9-digit SIREN.
  • Swapping the key digits when typing the number by hand.

French VAT numbers in practice

For most businesses the two-digit key is calculated from the SIREN with a modulo-97 formula, which is why it catches most typos in the nine digits after it. SIREN numbers are issued by INSEE through the SIRENE register, and the public French business directory (Annuaire des Entreprises) shows both the SIREN and the intra-community VAT number of a company, so you can read the key there instead of guessing it.

Monaco is part of the French VAT area, so businesses in Monaco also have VAT numbers with the FR prefix and VIES checks them through France. The French overseas departments, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion, are outside the EU VAT area.

The 14-digit SIRET adds a 5-digit establishment code (NIC) to the SIREN, so the first nine digits of a SIRET are the SIREN you need. The key still has to come from the supplier, an invoice or the business directory.

How to check French VAT numbers

Paste your French numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with FR. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the France format (FR + 2-character key + 9-digit SIREN). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the France tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

French VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a French VAT number?

FR followed by a 2-character key and the 9-digit SIREN, for example FR12345678901.

Can I use the SIRET number instead?

No. The SIRET has 14 digits and identifies an establishment. The VAT number uses the 9-digit SIREN plus the key.

Why does my French VAT number have the wrong format?

The key is probably missing. FR plus 9 digits is only the SIREN; the full number has 11 characters after FR.

Does VIES return the company name for French numbers?

VIES returns name and address when the member state provides them. justaxit shows whatever VIES returns next to each result.
