Validate Maltese VAT numbers (VAT registration number) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Malta (MT + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
Maltese VAT numbers are issued by the Commissioner for Revenue and follow a simple pattern: MT followed by 8 digits.
Malta has more than one type of VAT registration. Businesses that use the small-undertaking exemption are generally not registered for intra-EU transactions, so their number is not expected to show as valid in VIES. If a Maltese supplier is invalid, ask which type of registration they hold.
Maltese registrations are named after the article of the Maltese VAT Act under which a business is registered. Article 10 is the standard registration for businesses that charge VAT. Article 11 covers small undertakings that use the exemption, and those numbers are generally not valid for intra-EU transactions. Article 12 is for businesses that are not registered under Article 10 but make intra-EU acquisitions or receive services from abroad, and those numbers can be checked in VIES.
If a Maltese customer or supplier comes back invalid, asking whether they are registered under Article 10, 11 or 12 usually explains the result. Individuals in Malta are identified by an identity card number that ends in a letter; that is not a VAT number either.
Paste your Maltese numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with MT. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Malta format (MT + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Malta tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

The business may hold a registration that does not cover intra-EU transactions, for example under the small-undertaking exemption. VIES only reports numbers valid for intra-EU trade.
