Danish VAT Number Check

Validate Danish VAT numbers (momsnummer, CVR-nummer) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Denmark (DK + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Danish VAT number

A Danish VAT number (momsnummer, from moms, the Danish word for VAT) is normally the company's 8-digit CVR number with the DK prefix. The CVR is the Central Business Register, and every Danish company is registered there.

Because the CVR number is public and widely printed, Danish numbers are usually easy to find. The main thing to check is that the business is actually registered for VAT, which is what VIES reports.

Danish VAT number format

  • Format: DK + 8 digits
  • Example: DK12345678 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 10 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: momsnummer, CVR-nummer
  • The format is DK followed by exactly 8 digits.

Where to find a Danish VAT number

  • On Danish invoices, which show the CVR or VAT number of the seller.
  • In the public Central Business Register (CVR), searchable by company name.
  • On company websites and letterheads, often labelled CVR-nr.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the CVR number without DK.
  • Writing the number in groups (12 34 56 78) and losing a digit. Spaces are fine, missing digits are not.
  • Using a production unit number (P-nummer), which is a different 10-digit identifier.

Danish VAT numbers in practice

The CVR register is run by the Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen), and its public search on datacvr.virk.dk shows a company's name, address and CVR number. VAT registration itself is handled by the Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen). The eighth digit of a CVR number is a modulus 11 check digit, so a single mistyped digit normally gives a number that no company holds.

Some Danish companies register parts of their business separately under SE numbers (SE-nummer), which also have 8 digits. When VAT is registered under an SE number, that number with DK in front is the one to check, so ask the supplier which number appears on their invoices.

The Faroe Islands and Greenland belong to the Kingdom of Denmark but are outside the EU VAT area. A business registered only there has no DK VAT number that VIES can confirm.

A Danish business must show its CVR or SE number on its invoices, so an invoice is usually the quickest place to find the right 8 digits.

How to check Danish VAT numbers

Paste your Danish numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with DK. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Denmark format (DK + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Denmark tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Danish VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a Danish VAT number?

DK followed by 8 digits, for example DK12345678.

Is the Danish VAT number the same as the CVR number?

Usually yes: the VAT number is the 8-digit CVR number with DK in front.

Why is a Danish CVR number invalid in VIES?

Being in the CVR register does not mean the business is registered for VAT. VIES only confirms VAT registrations.

What is an SE number in Denmark?

An 8-digit registration number that some companies use for separately registered parts of their business. If VAT is registered under an SE number, check that number with the DK prefix.
