Validate Dutch VAT numbers (btw-identificatienummer, btw-id, btw-nummer) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Netherlands (NL + 9 digits + B + 2 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
The Dutch VAT identification number (btw-identificatienummer, or btw-id) has a unique structure: NL, 9 digits, the letter B and two more digits, for example NL123456789B01. It is issued by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst).
Since 2020, sole proprietors in the Netherlands have two numbers: the btw-id, which goes on invoices and websites and is the one to check in VIES, and a separate omzetbelastingnummer used only for communication with the tax administration. Only the btw-id belongs in a VIES check.
For legal entities such as a BV, the nine digits of the btw-id are usually the RSIN, the fiscal number of the entity that is also shown in the KVK register. For sole proprietors, the btw-id introduced in 2020 is no longer derived from the owner's citizen service number (BSN), to protect their privacy.
The two digits after the B distinguish registrations. B01 is by far the most common suffix, but others exist, so do not change a suffix to 01 to make a number look right: check it as it appears on the invoice.
Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba (the Caribbean Netherlands) are outside the EU VAT area and apply their own general expenditure tax, so a registration there is not a btw-id.
Paste your Dutch numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with NL. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Netherlands format (NL + 9 digits + B + 2 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Netherlands tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
NL followed by 9 digits, the letter B and 2 digits, for example NL123456789B01.
No. The KVK number has 8 digits and identifies the business in the Chamber of Commerce register. The btw-id is a separate number.
The btw-identificatienummer (btw-id). The omzetbelastingnummer is only for dealings with the tax administration.
The B and the two digits after it are part of the number. Without them the Dutch format is incomplete.
Not any more. Since 2020 sole proprietors have a btw-id that is not based on their citizen service number (BSN). Legal entities usually use their RSIN.
