Validate Finnish VAT numbers (ALV-numero, Y-tunnus (Business ID)) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Finland (FI + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
The Finnish VAT number (ALV-numero, from arvonlisävero, value added tax) is derived directly from the Business ID, the Y-tunnus. A Y-tunnus is written as seven digits, a hyphen and a check digit, for example 1234567-8.
To turn a Business ID into the EU VAT number, remove the hyphen and add FI in front: 1234567-8 becomes FI12345678. Once you know this rule, Finnish numbers are among the simplest in the EU to prepare for a VIES check.
The YTJ service is run jointly by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and the Finnish Tax Administration (Vero). Its public company search shows the Business ID and also which tax registers the company is in, including the VAT register, which makes it a useful cross-check for Finnish suppliers.
The digit after the hyphen is a check digit calculated from the first seven. Some older Business IDs had only six digits before the hyphen; they are now written with a leading zero, for example 0123456-7. Spreadsheets often drop that zero, which leaves FI plus 7 digits and fails the format check.
The Åland Islands belong to Finland but are outside the EU VAT area. Åland businesses have Finnish Business IDs, but goods moving between Åland and the rest of the EU, including mainland Finland, are treated like imports and exports for VAT.
Paste your Finnish numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with FI. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Finland format (FI + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Finland tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
Remove the hyphen and add FI in front. Business ID 1234567-8 becomes VAT number FI12345678.
FI followed by 8 digits, 10 characters in total.
The company may not be registered for VAT. VIES only confirms numbers that are valid for intra-EU transactions.
Probably a leading zero was dropped. Older Business IDs start with 0 (for example 0123456-7), so the VAT number is FI01234567. Format the column as text and restore the zero.
