Cypriot VAT Number Check

Validate Cypriot VAT numbers (Αριθμός Εγγραφής ΦΠΑ, VAT registration number) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Cyprus (CY + 8 digits + 1 letter) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Cypriot VAT number

Cyprus VAT numbers are issued by the Tax Department of the Republic of Cyprus. In Greek the number is the Αριθμός Εγγραφής ΦΠΑ (ΦΠΑ is the Greek abbreviation for VAT), and in English documents it is usually just called the VAT registration number.

The Cypriot format is distinctive because it ends in a letter: CY, then eight digits, then one check letter. That trailing letter is part of the number and is easy to lose when numbers are copied between systems.

Cypriot VAT number format

  • Format: CY + 8 digits + 1 letter
  • Example: CY12345678X (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 11 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: Αριθμός Εγγραφής ΦΠΑ, VAT registration number
  • Cyprus uses CY as its prefix, not EL. Only Greece uses EL, even though Greek is spoken in both countries.
  • The last character is a letter, so the number is 8 digits plus 1 letter after CY.

Where to find a Cypriot VAT number

  • On invoices issued by the Cypriot supplier.
  • In contracts and on the company letterhead.
  • From the supplier directly: the VAT number is different from the company registration number (for example HE 123456).

Common input mistakes

  • Dropping the final letter, leaving only 8 digits.
  • Using the company registration number (HE followed by digits) instead of the VAT number.
  • Using EL or GR instead of CY.
  • Typing the final letter as a look-alike Greek capital (for example Χ instead of X) when copying from a Greek-language document.

Cypriot VAT numbers in practice

The final letter is a check character calculated from the eight digits, so it cannot be guessed or left out. When numbers are copied from Greek-language documents, watch for Greek capital letters that look like Latin ones, such as Χ, Τ or Ρ. They are different characters, so the number fails the format check even though it looks correct on screen.

Cypriot companies are registered with the Department of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property, which issues the HE registration number. VAT registration is a separate step with the Tax Department, so a company can hold an HE number without having a CY VAT number at all.

VIES covers VAT registrations of the Republic of Cyprus. EU law, including the VAT rules, is suspended in the areas not under the effective control of the government of the Republic, so a business registered only there has no CY number that VIES can confirm.

How to check Cypriot VAT numbers

Paste your Cypriot numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with CY. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Cyprus format (CY + 8 digits + 1 letter). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Cyprus tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Cypriot VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a Cyprus VAT number?

CY followed by 8 digits and 1 letter, for example CY12345678X.

Why does a Cyprus VAT number without a letter fail?

The trailing letter is part of the number. Without it the number has the wrong format and cannot be checked.

Is the HE number the VAT number?

No. HE numbers are company registration numbers. The VAT number starts with CY and ends with a letter.

My Cyprus number looks right but fails. Why?

Check the last character. If it was copied from a Greek-language document it may be a Greek capital that looks like a Latin letter (for example Χ instead of X). Retype the letter on a Latin keyboard.
