Validate Portuguese VAT numbers (NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), NIPC) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Portugal (PT + 9 digits) before it is sent to VIES.
Portugal uses the tax identification number as its VAT number: the NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) for individuals and the NIPC (Número de Identificação de Pessoa Coletiva) for companies. Both have 9 digits, and for intra-EU use they are written with the PT prefix.
The Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, AT) administers these numbers, and businesses manage them through its online Portal das Finanças. Company numbers usually start with 5, while numbers of individuals start with other digits.
For companies, the registration number in the Portuguese commercial register is the same as the NIPC, so the same 9 digits appear on the company's registry certificate (certidão permanente), on its invoices and, with PT in front, in VIES. The final digit is a check digit calculated from the first eight.
Portuguese invoices also carry an ATCUD, a unique document code required since 2023, and a QR code. The ATCUD identifies the invoice, not the business, so it is never a VAT number.
Businesses in the Azores and Madeira are within the EU VAT area and have ordinary PT numbers that VIES checks in the same way as numbers from mainland Portugal, even though the islands apply their own VAT rates.
Portuguese businesses communicate their invoice data to the Tax and Customs Authority, which shows it to both parties through the e-Fatura portal, so each invoice is linked to the NIF of the supplier and, when one is given, of the customer.
Paste your Portuguese numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with PT. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.
justaxit first checks each entry against the Portugal format (PT + 9 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Portugal tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.
Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.
PT followed by 9 digits, for example PT123456789.
Yes, the digits are the same. For intra-EU purposes the NIF or NIPC is written with the PT prefix.
Having a NIF does not mean being registered for intra-EU transactions. VIES only reports numbers valid for intra-EU trade.
No. They use ordinary PT numbers with 9 digits. The islands have their own VAT rates, but the number format and the VIES check are the same.
