Luxembourg VAT Number Check

Validate Luxembourg VAT numbers (numéro d'identification à la TVA, TVA intracommunautaire) against the EU VIES service. Paste one number or a whole list below: every entry is format-checked for Luxembourg (LU + 8 digits) before it is sent to VIES.

About the Luxembourg VAT number

Luxembourg VAT numbers (numéro d'identification à la TVA) are issued by the Luxembourg VAT administration, the Administration de l'enregistrement, des domaines et de la TVA (AED), and have one of the shortest formats in the EU: LU followed by 8 digits.

Luxembourg companies also carry a Trade and Companies Register number (RCS), which starts with a letter, for example B123456. The RCS is kept by Luxembourg Business Registers (LBR). The RCS number is a company register reference, not a VAT number, and it is the most common wrong value in supplier data for Luxembourg.

Luxembourg VAT number format

  • Format: LU + 8 digits
  • Example: LU12345678 (illustrative, not a real number)
  • Length: 10 characters including the prefix
  • Local name: numéro d'identification à la TVA, TVA intracommunautaire
  • The format is LU followed by exactly 8 digits.

Where to find a Luxembourg VAT number

  • On Luxembourg invoices, labelled TVA or VAT.
  • On the company website, usually next to the RCS number.
  • In contracts and letterheads.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering the RCS number (for example B123456) instead of the VAT number.
  • Entering the national identification number (matricule), which is a different, longer number.
  • Leaving out LU.

Luxembourg VAT numbers in practice

Luxembourg splits its tax administration in two. VAT is handled by the AED, while income and corporate taxes are handled by the Administration des contributions directes (ACD). A tax number from the ACD is therefore not a VAT number, and only the AED issues LU VAT numbers.

The last two of the eight digits are a check number: the first six digits modulo 89. A mistyped digit therefore usually gives a number that does not exist, which VIES reports as invalid.

The national identification number (matricule) has 11 digits for legal entities and 13 for individuals, so it never fits the 8-digit VAT format.

Many Luxembourg companies are holding or investment entities. A company that is listed in the RCS is not necessarily registered for VAT, so VIES can report its number as invalid even though the company exists and is active.

How to check Luxembourg VAT numbers

Paste your Luxembourg numbers into the validator above, one per line, each starting with LU. Spaces, dots and hyphens are removed automatically, and lower-case letters are converted to upper case.

justaxit first checks each entry against the Luxembourg format (LU + 8 digits). Numbers with the wrong shape are flagged immediately and are not sent to VIES. Well-formed numbers are then checked through VIES, which asks the Luxembourg tax administration whether the number is currently valid for intra-EU transactions.

Each result shows valid or invalid, plus the name and address when the member state shares them through VIES. If the national service is temporarily unavailable, the number is marked for retry rather than reported as invalid. Registered users can save lists and export results to CSV, Excel or PDF.

Luxembourg VAT number FAQ

What is the format of a Luxembourg VAT number?

LU followed by 8 digits, for example LU12345678.

Is the RCS number the VAT number?

No. The RCS number (for example B123456) identifies the company in the trade register. The VAT number is LU plus 8 digits.

Can I check Luxembourg and Belgian numbers together?

Yes. Paste a mixed list with each country prefix into the batch EU VAT checker.

Is the matricule a Luxembourg VAT number?

No. The matricule is a national identification number with 11 digits for legal entities and 13 for individuals. The VAT number is LU plus 8 digits, issued by the AED.

Why is a Luxembourg company from the RCS invalid in VIES?

Being listed in the RCS does not mean being registered for VAT. Holding and investment companies in particular are not always VAT-registered, and VIES only confirms numbers that are valid for intra-EU transactions.
